Success for in the Fours and Pairs finals of the 2016 South Glamorgan Bowls Association competitions
Sunday July 17th proved to be a good date for four members of the Pontyclun Athletic Bowls club in the Finals event of the South Glamorgan Bowls Association competitions, held at the Llanbradach bowls club. Four members of the club qualified to reach the Fours final with two of them also qualifying for the over 60s pairs final. They all started their momentous journey back in May.
The first final commenced in the morning with the four competitors of Allan Hopkins, last seasons club Champion, Gerald Farnham, Welsh Bowls Association Executive Ray Davies, and Alan Malkin. The Pontyclun four and their opponents, Whitchurch Bowls, settled down well in the opening ends and after five ends the score read 3-4. The sixth end saw Pontyclun collect a triple of shots to take the lead 6-4. With the encounter played in good spirit from both teams and a passion to produce fine bowling, the 13th end saw the scoreboard showing 13 shots to Pontyclun in reply to 8 shots from Whitchurch. With five ends remaining, the opponents desperately worked hard on their performance to reduce their deficit. On the 14th end Ray Davies produced a first class delivery to thwart a head of bowls that was lying four shots to the opponents. Whitchurch were limited to a single from this position and gained a further single on the next end with the score now reading 13-10. Pontyclun held their composure, collecting a single followed by a double on the penultimate end. The final end saw Pontyclun holding a count of four shots which virtually sealed their goal. However the Whitchurch skip with his last delivery had the last word, producing a drive shot to "kill" the head, requiring the final end to be replayed. Pontyclun secured the title by defending their advantage of shots shrugging off a late challenge from their opponents, gaining a further two shots in the final end. The jubilant Pontyclun four hailed their achievement as a great success, going one better than when it was first played in 2010, where Pontyclun were runners up.
During the afternoon Pairs event with Gerald Farnham leading and Alan Malkin skipping, faced a pair from their neighbouring club, and one of their great rivals, Llantrisant. The Pontyclun pair suffered an early setback on the first two ends conceding a triple and a double. However, the Llantrisant pair failed to add to their tally on the next six ends, with Farnham & Malkin adding 11 shots including a count of five shots on the 5th end. Another count of five shots gained on the 13th end give the Pontyclun pair a comfortable cushion of 10 shots. The 14th and 15th ends brought about a lapse in their performance, with Farnham and Malkin conceding a triple and a count of four shots to give their opponents a last attempt to recover their early gain. The Pontyclun pair however held their nerve and strived to the winning post by obtaining a double and hitting their opponents for six shots with one end remaining. Gerald Farnham in his first season of competing in the County's Competition event was more than delighted in his success and now looks forward along with Alan Hopkins, Ray Davies and Alan Malkin to competing in the National finals staged at the prestigious home of Welsh bowls - the Llandrindod Wells bowls club in August.

Pontyclun unfortunately came up against a very strong side in Ely Valley in the semi final of the WD Jones cup losing both rinks home and away, the format of this competition. However, it was another success in reaching this far in the competition. Here's to further success next season.
We are through to the Quarter final of the WD Jones Cup where we will be playing Ynyscynon on a 2 rink home 2 away format. This is due to be played on Wednesday 29 June at 6pm. Please make yourself available online or on the noticeboard at the club. The Taff Ely game that was due to be played that evening will be rearranged.
The club has had mixed fortunes in the cup games so far this season. Despite 2 good wins out of 3 in the Carruthers Cup the first team were not successful in going through to the knockout stages. We fell at the first hurdle in the Presidents cup and we reported earlier that we lost in the final of the Ajax cup.
However, we are through to the quarterfinals of the WD Jones cup after two successful matches where we are required to play 2 rinks at home and 2 away. Well done to the teams and lets get to the final. See details above for the date of the next round.
Details to follow
The season has now got underway. Results are now published on the link at the top of the page under results.
AJAX Cup Final defeat.
We have already been in one final this season in which we played a strong team from Ely Valley. Unfortunately it wasn't our day and we had to settle for runners up. Played at the Lllantrisant club we were unable to win any of the 4 rinks, although one, under skip Alan Malkin came close with a score of 17-21. Still it was a good experience for a number of new players who would not have played against a team that was made up of mainly PG1 players.
Open Days
We had two successful open days on 17 and 24 April. Both the men and women's teams benefited from interest on each day and new members have already been signed up. This bodes well for coming season. A huge thanks to all the coaches who were present on the days. All 5, Alan Malkin, Richard Murray, Keith Russell, Gerald Farnham and Barrie Waite offered their services and the feedback was well received. Remember if anyone would like some coaching then please get in touch with them to book some mutual time.
OPEN MEETING OF MENS CLUB
We will be having an open meeting to discuss the start of the new season etc all members welcome. This has now been confirmed as being on 31 March in the lounge at 7pm.
ATHLETIC FEES
If you have done already please pay your membership fee for the Social club. This was due by 14th January.
ATHLETIC AGM
As you will be aware we have a motion to put to the Athletic AGM and therefore it is important that as many of us as possible attend to vote (you will obviously have to have paid your membership fee!). Watch this space for confirmation of the date in late March/early April.
FRIDAY NIGHT IS PRACTICE NIGHT
It is intended to encourage players to practice on Fridays when it is expected the rink markers will also be in place for the home game the following day. We also hope to have at least one of our coaches available should players wish to avail them of their services.
2015 season
The Alliance Annual Dinner went off very well, the food being outstanding, and Les Harris is to be congratulated.
The 2015 Finals Day went very well with some very interesting games taking place. Well done to Mervyn Pearce for getting all the events in this year's Competitions organised on time. A job well done! Please see the Results
Oh and outside of the actual bowls, Alan Malkin put on a wonderful, memorable performance to celebrate his wife, Brenda's 70th birthday. on Friday the 14th.
A wonderful surprise for her, plenty of great food and we were regally entertained by the Abercynon Male Voice Choir. The majority of the Pontyclun Bowlers together with a large support from the Taff Ely Indoor bowlers. A real credit is due to Alan and I'm sure Brenda appreciated it!
AGM
The AGM produced some surprises and good to see some bowlers accepting responsibility which may have been lacking in recent seasons. Best Wishes to them all, together with our appreciation to last Seasons Officials. For details of the members of the committee see the officials page.
Though not included in the Officials list Mick Southgate has offered himself as Vice Captain of the PG2. Well done Mick, Oh and Mr Harries will continue as Manager, Secretary and Captain of the Alliance team. We trust he will get more support in 2016. My apologies to some omissions from the Officials page but I blame my computer generated lists
The Taff-Ely Indoor Bowls Centre, in Pontypridd has changed its Telephone number, a number of the Pontyclun bowlers use this facility.
Please note it is currently 01443 491952,
